Eliot has an infectious enthusiasm for his subject coupled with the rare ability to inspire the same in his students. Eliot's vast knowledge of the subject is underpinned by an analytical rigour but he never loses his sense of fun and can make even the driest of topics seem fascinating. Over the ten years Eliot taught me, his lessons were often the highlight of my week and my decision to study history at university was entirely down to him. Eliot is the gold standard in tutoring and I can't recommend him highly enough.
Eliot has been so much more than an English tutor for our son. He has been tutoring Thomas since he started at a State secondary school; providing the one to one relationship that is harder to achieve with the larger class sizes. Eliot has raised Thomas’s aspiration, helped keep his grades where they can be and been a mentor and friend to our son. He is always a joy to have in our house and Thomas looks forward to the sessions. Eliot also did a small bit of ‘top up’ with our daughter when she was taking 11+ entrance exams. He helped to boost her confidence and self belief. She ended up with offers from Surbiton and Sutton High schools and I am sure Eliot’s input played a good part in that.
I have had the great privilege of knowing Mr Eliot Watkins for almost 25 years. As the mother of two boys who had the good fortune to study under Mr Watkins at KCS, I first came across him during his narration of a re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings; not only was it replete with historic detail, but it was delivered in a most stimulating, enlightening yet sophisticated manner, captivating boys and parents for its duration.
Mr Watkins went on to tutor both of my boys for the scholarship exam at an academic boarding school and thanks largely to his expert tuition, both were successful. The boys always looked forward to their sessions with him as he is not only a great academic but he has a wonderful sense of humour and an ability to skillfully present the material in a manner that fosters interaction and retention.
Mr Watkins sees only the positive side of not only students but all people and has a great talent in engaging with others. His knowledge of history (and many other subjects) is daunting yet I struggle to think of an individual who is more self-effacing and modest. Not surprisingly, he was one of the most highly regarded (and popular) teachers at KCS. Those fortunate enough to study under Eliot Watkins will have a most memorable educational experience.
Eliot was highly recommended to me by a mixture of parents and his ex students. I was intrigued to meet him as it’s not often that the children speak so fondly of their teacher! At the time my son was struggling emotionally and was beginning to prepare for the 11 plus. The warmth and friendship and unique way of Eliot has helped my son discover his own true potential. He has become confident to articulate his thoughts, feelings and opinions. On an academic level the guidance offered by Eliot has been incredible to help him structure his answers in a concise way. The combination of mentor and academic support has been a real gift for my son and we cannot thank Eliot enough.
